Minority Mortgage Applicants Denied at Higher Rates

Black and Hispanic home-loan applicants in New York are more than twice as likely to be denied as white applicants, a study by StreetEasy found.

Applications submitted by black consumers were denied 33.6% of the time, according to the StreetEasy report. Hispanic consumers' applications were denied 29.2% of the time. White consumers were denied 15.8% of the time.

"The study reveals the difficulty of financing a home in New York City, especially for racial and ethnic minorities who have lower median household incomes and face access-to-credit issues," StreetEasy said in a news release.

StreetEasy's study was based on an analysis of 2013 data furnished under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act. StreetEasy is a subsidiary of Zillow Group.
