The number of unique individuals holding state mortgage licenses has risen 7.5% from one year ago, according to the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System.

The Conference of State Bank Supervisors released the 2016 2Q NMLS Mortgage Industry Report Thursday, which showed that the number of unique individuals licensed was 133,868 by the end of the second quarter, up 4.6% since 1Q and 7.46% from 2015. Altogether, these individuals held 426,475 licenses because many are approved to originate loans in multiple states.

The number of federally registered individuals also rose, albeit by a smaller percentage, by 1.4% from last quarter and 1.37% from last year to 407,992.

Similarly, the number of unique state-licensed mortgage companies in the NMLS came to 15,840, an increase of 2.16% from the first quarter and 1.68% from a year ago. Meanwhile, federally registered institutions in the NMLS totaled 9,751 by the end of the second quarter, which is a slight increase from 9,691 in the first quarter but a decrease of 3.9% since 2015.

The CSBS also reported that the number of active mortgage loan originators increased by 1.3% nationwide and by 35.4% for the top-10 state-licensed companies from the second quarter of 2015.
