Former Freddie Mac Executive Tapped to Head FHA

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has selected current senior advisor and former Freddie Mac executive Ed Golding to head of the Office of Housing and Federal Housing Administration.

As HUD's principal deputy assistant secretary, Golding will take over for acting FHA commissioner and assistant secretary for the Office of Housing Biniam Gebre, who will become an advisor to Deputy Secretary Nani Coloretti. Golding's appointment was announced in an internal email from HUD Secretary Julian Castro.

Golding worked at Freddie Mac for 23 years before stepping down in 2012 as senior vice president of models, mission and research. He also worked as a visiting fellow at The Urban Institute before joining HUD as a senior advisor in 2013.

Secretary Castro welcomed the appointment, saying in his email that Golding "has been an invaluable advisor to me during my time as Secretary, and I'm confident that his experience and vision will be an incredible asset to FHA and the Office of Housing."

The Mortgage Bankers Association applauded the decision, with MBA president and CEO David Stevens saying, "FHA has a number of important items on its plate right now for both single family and multifamily housing finance, and I can't think of anyone better suited than [Golding] to lead those initiatives."

Stevens served as FHA commissioner in the Obama Administration from July 2009 through March 2011 when he took his current post at MBA.
