Julian Castro is slated to be sworn in Monday as the new head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He will become the 16th HUD secretary, succeeding Shaun Donovan who is moving to the White House to become the director of the Office of Management and Budget.

On July 9, the Senate confirmed the 39 year-old mayor of San Antonio by a 71-26 vote. The White House hasn't signaled when Donovan will be sworn in at OMB.

As the new secretary, Castro will play a significant role in setting the nation's housing policies as the housing recovery appears be to stalling and home sales slow.

He will also be running an agency with over 10,000 employees. As the mayor of the seventh largest U.S. city, Castro worked with the city council to set policy. But the city manager was responsible for implementing those policies and overseeing the city's 11,300 employees.

Castro was first elected mayor in 2009 and was re-elected to a third term in 2013. As mayor, he worked to revitalize San Antonio's urban core and encourage inner-city investment. He served two terms on the city council (2001-2005). The new HUD secretary graduated from Stanford University in 1996 and Harvard Law School in 2000.
