Roughly 167,800 families who face foreclosure will receive housing counseling through the eighth round of funding from the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program.

The government-funded NFMC program awarded $63.1 million to 29 state housing financing agencies, 18 housing counseling intermediaries and 67 community development and affordable housing organizations affiliated with the non-profit NeighborWorks, according to a Wednesday press release.

These organizations offer free assistance to families in danger of losing their homes, helping them enroll in government foreclosure prevention programs and identify other possible courses of action.

The NFMC program was founded in 2007 in order to help families affected by the housing crisis. NeighborWorks administers the program.
