Ellie Mae (ELLI), the mortgage technology vendor, has hired 20-year industry veteran Harry Gardner as vice president of electronic strategies.

In this newly created position, Gardner will be responsible for leading Ellie Mae's strategy and execution for electronic mortgages and electronic closings, the Pleasanton, Calif., company said in a press release. He will work with industry leaders and staff "to develop new strategies on data governance, transfer and delivery of electronic data and images" and various other initiatives, the company said.

"Harry has been one of the mortgage industry’s thought leaders on e-mortgage technology and XML data standards," with a wealth of experience, deep industry ties and strategic vision that will "take Ellie Mae's e-mortgage vision to the next level," said Jonathan Corr, president and chief operating officer of Ellie Mae.

Gardner will report directly to Joe Tyrrell, senior vice president of corporate strategy.

Most recently Gardner was president of SigniaDocs, a mortgage document preparation vendor whose stated aim is to "eliminate paper-based thinking and processes." He also is a former executive of the Mortgage Bankers Association and longtime leader of the Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization.

As vice president of industry technology for the MBA he was responsible for the association's technology committees, managing industry task forces on e-mortgage adoption, data management and information security, including the Fraud Prevention Database project and the National eNote Registry Task Force. For more than a decade, Gardner has held various leadership roles at MISMO and remains a member of the organization’s board of directors.

Gardner won Mortgage Technology magazine's Steve Fraser Visionary Award in 2012. The award recognizes the lifetime accomplishments of an outstanding mortgage technology innovator, visionary or evangelizer.
