Despite layoffs, Frederick, Md., mortgage office won't close

Dozens of workers at the Frederick, Md., office of First Guaranty Mortgage Corp. will be out of work after layoffs were announced, but the office won't close as initially reported by a state agency.

The layoffs at the Corporate Drive offices of First Guaranty Mortgage Corp. would affect 82 employees, according to a posting on the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation's Work Adjustment and Retraining Notifications website.

The entry was originally listed as a "total plant closure" on the site, but that has since been changed to a "mass layoff," said Theresa Blaner, a spokeswoman for DLLR.

Mike McElroy, a lawyer for First Guaranty, confirmed that 82 employees would be affected by the change but said the office would not close.

He declined to comment further on the layoffs.

It was unclear Monday how many people work in the Frederick office, although McElroy said that many First Guaranty employees work from home.

First Guaranty, based in Tysons Corner, Va., provides mortgage products and services in 47 states and the District of Columbia, according to its website.

Heather Graham, assistant director of the Frederick County Office of Economic Development, said First Guaranty had been in touch with Frederick County Workforce Services, and the county was working with the company to provide services to help employees find new jobs and understand the benefits that are available to them.

The county has been fortunate to see overall job growth in recent years, she said. But some sectors are still struggling.

The county's main concern is for the First Guaranty employees that are affected by the move, Graham said.

"For them, it's very personal," she said.
