Two 'zombie homes' demolished in Niagara Falls

Two adjoining houses on Sixth Street in Niagara Falls were demolished last week as part of the city's ongoing battle against zombie houses.

Under the state's anti-zombie law, the estimated $75,000 cost will be applied to the stalled foreclosures on the properties, whose mortgages are held by Ocwen Financial, according to Seth Piccirillo, Niagara Falls community development director.

Fourteen of Ocwen's 17 Niagara Falls properties were cited for building code violations. Twelve have been brought into compliance, said Christine Marino, the city's zombie fight coordinator. The two other cited homes were the ones the city demolished.

"After persistently enforcing the timeline outlined in the law, we have been experiencing much more cooperation from banks," Marino said. "The next step is continuing to partner with the banks to find innovative ways for disposition of the properties."
