MFA Financial Inc. co-CEO William Gorin died Aug. 10 after a long illness. He was 59.

The company had noted that Gorin, who had been undergoing treatment for cancer the past two years, was not able to join its last earnings call on Aug. 2. MFA also had promoted President and COO Craig Knutson to co-CEO on July 31 so that Gorin could focus on his health.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Gorin had been the New York-based company's CEO since January 2014 and held various executive positions at the mortgage real estate investment trust since 1997. Prior to that, he held various positions with PaineWebber Inc. and Shearson Lehman Hutton Inc.

He also has served as chairman of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts' Mortgage REIT Council.
