Bucking the trend was B of A, which lost 4.24% on the day. Before the market opened, the second largest U.S. bank said it earned $700 million, or 3 cents per diluted share, in 4Q12, compared to $2 billion, or $0.15 per diluted share, during the same time period last year.

During the period, the bank settled several of its mortgage-related problems.
