The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s top supervision and enforcement officer, Steven Antonakes, will also serve as the CFPB’s second-in-command.

CFPB director Richard Cordray has appointed Antonakes to be the bureau’s new deputy director. Antonakes has served as the acting deputy director since Raj Date left in January.

CFPB officials said they would conduct a search for a new deputy director to replace Date. But Cordray must have decided to stick with one of the bureau’s longest serving officials.

Antonakes was the bank commissioner for Massachusetts before he joined Elizabeth Warren’s CFPB stand-up team in November 2010 to build the bureau’s large bank supervision unit.

“I am happy to announce that Steve will be the official deputy director of the bureau,” Cordray said Wednesday. “He has adeptly led—and will continue to lead—our supervision, enforcement and fair lending teams.”
