Fannie Survey: More Homeowners Say It’s Time to Sell

The percentage of Americans who believe it is a good time to sell a home spiked in May to the highest level in three years, according to a Fannie Mae survey.

The monthly survey found that 40% of respondent homeowners and renters said now is a good time to sell, up from 30% in April and 16% a year ago.

“Sentiment toward selling a home appears to be catching up with the strengthening housing market,” said Fannie chief economist Doug Duncan.

The inventory of existing homes for sale has been tight this year, which is frustrating for buyers and pushing up home prices.

The May survey results “may foreshadow a gradual return to more normal levels of housing supply,” Duncan said.

The survey shows that 76% of respondents believe it is a good time to buy a home, up 5 percentage points from April.
