The New York State Banking Department reports the total number of delinquent homeowners has doubled to 134,000.
The most recent addition includes 76,744 pre-foreclosure notices sent to New York homeowners that were at least 90-days delinquent by May 31.
Currently over 400 mortgage loan servicers report data to the Banking Department each week in compliance with a 2009 state law that takes an early prevention approach to foreclosures.
Findings based on data gathered between Feb. 13 and Aug. 31 show the same four counties continue to face the highest total number of pre-foreclosure filings on owner-occupied, 1-to-4 family properties in the state.
At the top is Suffolk County with 19,880 pre-foreclosure notices, followed by Queens with 15,184, Nassau with 13,611, and Brooklyn with 11,037.
In accordance with Governor David A. Paterson’s 2009 Mortgage Foreclosure Law New York State residential mortgage servicers must inform the Banking Department about all notices they sent to homeowners at least 90 days prior to a foreclosure filing.
According to the Banking Department the launch of a new online system that enables lenders, assignees and mortgage servicers to file information has helped track and immediately report delinquency ratios allowing the department to share that information with foreclosure prevention service providers.
Ten non-profit housing counseling agencies throughout the state are part of a network that represents 38 of New York’s 62 counties.
