American Bankers Association has turned to former Oklahoma governor and Washington veteran Frank Keating to be their president and chief executive starting January 1.
Keating will replace Edward Yingling who is stepping down after 25 years at ABA.
"Frank was the unanimous choice of our search committee," said ABA chairman Stephen Wilson. "Frank comes from a family of bankers and served on the board of a savings bank," Wilson said.
Keating was president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers from 2003 until recently.
"His experience as assistant secretary of the Treasury and general counsel and acting deputy secretary of HUD will be helpful as Congress considers reform of GSEs and housing finance," Wilson said.
Keating was a Treasury assistant secretary (1988-89) and served at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (1990-93) during the administrations of President Ronald Reagan and President George H. Bush.
The Republican was elected governor of Oklahoma in 1994 and served two four-year terms.
