Eddice Hobson’s 1,192-square-foot home located in Natchez, Miss., sits on a bluff with a lovely view of the Mississippi River down below. However, a leaky roof prevented Hobson from enjoying her home.

Hobson said the roof was leaking in four rooms, including her bedroom.

“I’ve been here 30 years and the roof was on the house when I came here,” said the 73-year-old Hobson, who is living on a fixed income that kept her from having the ability to repair it.

That is why she applied for a Special Needs Assistance Program grant through the city of Natchez and Concordia Bank & Trust—a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas—which utilizes FHLB Dallas SNAP funds to assist homeowners in its community with needed repairs.

Hobson was awarded $4,700 for a new galvanized roof, which was just recently installed. Hobson added that the new roof has worked out great for her because she is now getting more rest.

“When it rains, I sleep,” Hobson added.

Natchez Mayor Larry Brown said the city is pleased to see the results of SNAP.

“A roof over one’s head is a basic need many of us take for granted,” Brown stated. “This grant program allows us to care for some of our most deserving residents, our senior citizens.”

The SNAP grants program was established in 2009 and through its member institutions like FHLB Dallas, has provided more than $6 million to 1,260 eligible homeowners.
