Before my own recent personal health scare, I had been posting a continuing series of items from a contributor who wishes to remain anonymous. His point is that to be successful in business, you need to remain healthy.
I will admit that in my case, a couple of small signs were at least misinterpreted, if not outright ignored, and what was a problem that probably could have been treated easier blew up into a situation where I was in the hospital for nearly two weeks and home from work for another two.
If you run your own shop or if you are paid strictly on commission, losing that much time from work could be detremental financially.
So let's continue with part five of the series:
• Keep a health log or journal. As we get older, invariably we start having issues and the more data we have for the doctors, whether conventional or alternative, the better equipped the doctors will be to help.
If you’re still "young" right now, you’re probably thinking “I don’t need to keep track of my health, I’m fine.” But over time, people who keep a log helps their doctor to diagnose issues that arise later.
And, if you have your own health log, it shows your doctor you pay close attention, so the doctor is more likely will give you better service because they know you’re paying attention, documenting things, etc. Remember, most doctors barely have time to see you for 10 minutes.
You think they have time to study your health history, look for trends and connect the dots? They just want to know "what hurts" on any particular day, and treat that, and move onto the next patient. Help them help you by keeping a health log.
• Follow up is important because many doctors, whether conventional or alternative medicine, do not do a good job of following up with you and tracking your results. When was the last time your doctor’s office called you up to check on your progress, etc? Is it getting better, worse, different, etc.
Many times, because neither they nor you are doing a good job tracking results, you never really get resolution to your issue. It is up to you to track results. So whatever health issue you’re dealing with, create a little questionnaire for yourself and fill it out every day when you wake up and before go to sleep
Some sample questions: On a scale of 1 to 10, how is my condition today? How do I feel today on a scale of 1 to 10? Is it improving or worsening? Am I experiencing any side effects? Am I sleeping better or worse? Identify the symptoms and rate each of those at the end of each day, then look for trends.
The patients who closely track his or her progress better tend to get better medical care because they can provide valuable feedback to their doctor to make adjustments. Set a recurring reminder in your cell phone or computer calendar program to report progress, etc.
I’m convinced that if you follow the ideas on this list, you’ll feel better, inside and out, and be more successful in your business. More next time.
