California Training Lawyers to Enforce New Servicing Law

The California attorney general has provided the National Housing Law Center a $1 million grant to spread the word about a new mortgage servicing law.

“The California Homeowners Bill of Rights gives borrowers more opportunities to stay in their homes,” said AG Kamala Harris. “This grant will help make sure the law is applied to access the state and that everyone gets the protection they are entitled to.”

The new law that went into effect at the beginning of the year restricts dual tracking and requires servicers to provide struggling borrowers with a single point of contact. It also imposes civil penalties for fraudulently signed mortgage documents and requires servicers to document their right to foreclose.

The $1 million grant will allow the National Housing Law Center to provide on-site training and webinars for 800 consumer and housing attorneys about the new law.

The grant will also be used provide support for cases that raise important legal issues and to create a library of litigation materials to assist attorneys.
