Walker & Dunlop Top Fannie Mae Multifamily Lender

Walker & Dunlop has moved up on the list of Fannie Mae Delegated Underwriting and Servicing program multifamily lenders from 10th in 2007 to the top spot for 2012, with volume of over $4 billion.

The Bethesda, Md.-based firm has been a DUS lender since the program started in 1988.

"It is incredibly exciting to see Walker & Dunlop recognized as the top Fannie Mae DUS lender by volume in 2012 in the country," commented Willy Walker, chairman and CEO.

"Only five years ago we were the 10th largest DUS lender, struggling to keep up with the country's largest financial services firms who dominated this business. Moving up in the rankings so quickly is extremely rewarding and is due to the exceptional work of the professionals at Walker & Dunlop and Fannie Mae."

Walker continued, “The Fannie Mae DUS program is a model public-private partnership that puts private capital at risk before taxpayer capital and has provided the platform for a firm like Walker & Dunlop to effectively grow and compete with the country's largest financial services firms."

One of the terms of the program is that DUS lenders retain the first-loss position in these loans.

Previously, Fannie Mae announced it provided nearly $34 billion of multifamily financing last year, the third highest total in its history.
