Hartnack is vice chairman and head of Consumer and Small Business Banking at U.S. Bancorp. He is responsible for Metropolitan Banking, Community Banking, 24-Hour Banking and Financial Sales, Home Mortgage, Consumer Lending and Finance, In-Store and Corporate On-Site Banking, Small Business Banking, Workplace and Student Banking, retail bank operations and corporate marketing and quality. He is also a member of the company's Managing Committee.Hartnack joined U.S. Bancorp in April 2005 from Union Bank of California, where he had served as vice chairman, director and head of the community banking group since 1991. Prior to that, he ran community banking as executive vice president at First Chicago and was in charge of corporate banking at First Interstate Bank of Oregon, where he began his banking career in 1971.Hartnack served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 to 1971, attained the rank of Captain, and flew 220 combat missions aboard the F-4B Phantom II in Southeast Asia. He received 14 Air Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V.Education. A native of Los Angeles, Hartnack earned a bachelors degree in economics from UCLA and a masters degree in business administration from Stanford University. He also is a graduate of the Strategic Marketing Management program at the Harvard Business School.Active in industry and community affairs, he is a past director of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, past director of MasterCard, Inc., past chairman of the California Bankers Association, past vice chairman of the California Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Bank Administration Institute, past chairman of the Los Angeles Urban League, and past director of the Consumer Bankers Association. He is currently a director of Operation Hope, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and Augsburg College. Additionally, he is a member of the California Club and the Minneapolis Club.
