Subscribe Now Property tax rates vary significantly across the country, and with a 2.06% swing between the highest and the lowest effective real-estate tax rates, where you live can mean an appreciable difference in the amount of property tax you will pay.
Wallethub recently analyzed real-estate property taxes across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The top five states in the final ranking have a low average effective real-estate tax rate of 0.44%. For a $281,900 home — the median home value in the U.S. as of 2022 — that's about $1,228 a year. That's in stark contrast to New Jersey, the state with the highest annual taxes, where a property owner would pay $6,563 a year on a home of the same value.
"Some states charge no property taxes at all, while others charge an arm and a leg," Cassandra Happe, Wallethub analyst, said in a release. "Americans who are considering moving and want to maximize the amount of money they take home should take into account property tax rates, in addition to other financial factors like the overall cost of living, when deciding on a city."
