A Florida title agent and former mortgage broker has been sentenced for her role in a reverse mortgage loan fraud scheme.
Yesenia Pouparina, who was convicted in February of four counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud, will serve 46 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for taking part in the loan scam.
Senior Judge Richard W. Goldberg, sitting by designation in the Southern District of Florida, also ordered Pouparina to pay $207,810 in restitution.
According to court documents, Pouparina was a licensed title agent in Miami who wanted to obtain a reverse mortgage loan worth more than $400,000 on her own property using her mother’s name who did not meet the requirements of the
Therefore, the defendant submitted a false loan application and altered documents that supported this inaccurate information in order to counter her mother’s ineligibility to participate in the HECM program.
Pouparina acted as the title agent for the loan and disbursed the loan proceeds directly to her own bank accounts, court evidence revealed. Furthermore, Pouparina collected fees generated by the loan and profited by using these proceeds in connection with her business as a hard-money lender in other mortgage deals.
Besides the conviction on the fraud counts, the jury also found forfeitable three bank accounts controlled by the defendant, which were seized by the government during the course of the investigation.
