Freddie Mac chief operating officer Bruce Witherell abruptly announced his resignation from the company earlier this week, saying he was leaving for "personal reasons."
His departure was not announced in a press release, and instead was mentioned in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Feb. 9.
A Freddie Mac spokesman offered no additional comment other than what was in the SEC filing.
Witherell, who had a long career on Wall Street, including stints at Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers, joined the GSE in September 2009. He also worked at subprime lender Household Finance.
He reported to company CEO Charles Haldeman. No announcement has been made on his replacement.
Freddie will unveil its fourth quarter results in about two weeks.
