Carrie Taylor of Harvey, La., received a $7,000 Homebuyer Equity Leverage Partnership grant. The HELP program assists income-qualified, first-time homebuyers with down payment and closing costs. "I have always wanted to own my home before I die," she said.

FHLB-Dallas issued $37,000 in HELP funds through First NBC Bank so far this year. Overall, it has awarded $1.7 million this year, which helped 309 families; in Louisiana, it has distributed $226,000, which aided 41 families.

HELP grant recipients can get up to $5,000; that increases to $7,000 if an FHLB-Dallas member banker or other mortgage lender contributes at least $350 million towards costs associated with providing the loan to the borrower.

Taylor said the grant "helped me get into my home. I'm enjoying my house and I'm thankful for the grant because I wouldn't have been able to move into my home without it."
