JPMorgan Chase has appointed a new head of mortgage servicing to replace Mike Weinbach, who recently stepped down from the role to become the chief executive of mortgage banking.

The bank promoted Peter Muriungi, who has served as the head of shared services, to the position, a spokeswoman confirmed Friday. He also previously served as the head of remediation and was responsible for portfolio optimization strategy.

Muriungi also worked to implement new default mortgage servicing rules at JPMorgan Chase following the signing of Dodd-Frank. He joined Chase in 2013, having previously served as the senior vice president of special portfolio management and servicing strategies at GMAC Mortgage. He is also a veteran of EMC Mortgage Corp., where he worked as senior vice president of strategy and analytics before joining GMAC.

Weinbach stepped into his new role as the CEO of mortgage banking in December as part of a wave of executive changes prompted by the departure of Eileen Serra, the former CEO of the Chase Card Services unit. Weinbach's predecessor, Kevin Watters, was appointed to replace Serra at that time.
