Mike Gill, the senior vice president for capital markets at Housing Policy Council, died Saturday following critical injuries sustained after being shot in Washington D.C. a week prior. He was 56 years old.

The former chief of staff to U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo was caught in the fray of a crime spree that resulted in the deaths of three people, including the perpetrator. Gill was shot while he was getting out of his car, according to reports.

Those who knew the St. Louis native remember him as a doting family man and an astute professional with a shining sense of humor.

"Mike came to Washington in 1993 and began his career after graduating from the University of Dayton. His blend of humility, humor, and Midwest charm became his signature leadership style, and he quickly found career success," his wife, Kristina Gill, wrote in a statement.

Prior to his two years at HPC, Gill served as a senior vice president at Common Securitization Solutions, the platform developed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for the issuance and administration of the Uniform Mortgage-Backed Security. He also was a board member of the Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization.

From 2016 to 2019, under Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, Gill worked for the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the federal agency that oversees commodities markets. Gill also served three terms on the D.C. Board of Elections.

Ed DeMarco, the president of HPC, said Gill's passing is a "huge loss for the Housing Policy Council and for the Washington, D.C. community, which has lost an outstanding citizen, neighbor, co-worker, and friend."

"We admired Mike personally and professionally; he was an outstanding lawyer, public servant, colleague, and community member, giving his time and talent in service to his country, his city, his church, and his community. More than that, Mike was a devoted husband and father, who adored his wife and children," DeMarco added in a written statement Saturday.

Gill leaves behind his wife and three children, Sean, Brian, and Annika.
