Private MIs Helped in $8.8B of Refinancings and Modifications

Members of the Mortgage Insurance Cos. of America assisted in $8.8 billion of Home Affordable Refinance Program and other refinance workouts in the fourth quarter, down from $9.1 billion in 3Q12.

For the full year, MICA members helped in $29.2 billion of HARP refis. To put that into perspective, in four years, the total dollar volume of HARP refis that MICA member participated in since 2009 is $51.8 billion.

During 4Q12, MICA members did $1.1 billion of Home Affordable Modification Program loans, the lowest dollar amount for the year and down approximately $14 million from 3Q12. For the full year, there was $4.9 billion in HAMP activity, down from $8.1 billion in 2011.

Other modification program activity had volume of $1.3 billion, down from $1.4 billion in 3Q12. There was a total of $4.8 billion of loans modified through other programs in 2012, down from $7.9 billion in 2011.

Cumulative refinance and modification activity from the start of these programs in 2009 through 4Q12 is $98.1 billion in dollar volume, or 555,505 loans. MICA said the $11.2 billion of cumulative workout volume in 4Q12 is 75% more than reported for 4Q11.
