The Denver-based real estate brokerage firm reported that the median price of a home was $181,322 in November, up 1.4% from October.  Compared to a year ago, prices are down 4.2%.

In October sales fell 10%.

RE/MAX chief executive Margaret Kelly noted that November sales were 8.1% higher than a year ago. Also, closed transactions over the past five months have been higher compared to the same months in 2010.

"This market is trying hard to stabilize itself with home sales significantly stronger than a year ago," Kelly said.

Existing home sales normally decline this time of year. The results are amplified in the RE/MAX report because the sales numbers are not seasonally adjusted.

The National Association of Realtors releases its November existing home sales report on Wednesday (Dec. 21).
