“We are focusing on expanding our presence in lower cost channels,” SunTrust Banks chairman and chief executive William Rogers told investors and analyst during recent conference call.

The Atlanta-based bank has call centers in Richmond and Orlando. It opened a third call center in Charlotte last fall.

The company is “investing in and growing the consumer direct channel,” a spokesman told NMN.

Last year, SunTrust Mortgage originated 14,300 loans through the call centers, compared to 6,300 loans in 2011.

Overall, the regional bank made $32 billion in single-family loans in 2012, up 39% from the prior year.
