Survey Finds Americans Want to Move Into New Homes

In what is a good sign for the home purchase market, moving company Mayflower said residential moves were up 16% in what are historically its slowest months for such activity—January through March.

The company also did a survey which finds 47% of respondents feel more comfortable purchasing a home right now than at any other time in the past five years. Approximately one-third said they are ready to make a move right now, a statistic which reflects what some have been saying regarding pent-up demand on the verge of being unleashed.

The survey found that the desire for a new or better home is a leading motive to move, followed by the desire for a more attractive neighborhood to live in and the desire to become a homeowner.

Still what might hold some people back from moving is how they feel about the process in general. More than half said they would prefer a trip to the dentist (with 15% adding they feel root canal would be more enjoyable than moving), while 44% would rather go a week without Internet access than move.
