Former Texas Congressman Dick Armey has come up with a whole list of ways to balance the federal budget, including eliminating a few cabinet agencies, chief among them the Department of Housing and Urban Development. (His suggestions were published this week in an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal.) Keep in mind that a few weeks back, President Obama's bi-partisan commission on reducing the deficit suggested whittling down the cherished mortgage interest deduction to help reduce the annual budget deficit. If consumers cannot take a richer MID, that money flows directly to the bottom line of the U.S. Treasury. As for Armey, he heads a group called FreedomWorks, a conservative grassroots organization that says on its website: "FreedomWorks members know that government goes to those who show up, and are leading the fight for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom."
