The mortgage industry has made more than $5 million in political contributions this campaign season. With the election just weeks away, here's a look at the mortgage industry firms that have made the largest political contributions during the current election cycle that began in January 2015. Most contributions are from individual employees of the companies. And while Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are prohibited from having their own political action committees, other groups, including the Mortgage Bankers Association and National Association of Mortgage Brokers, have PAC affiliates that are included in the totals. The data, from the Center for Responsive Politics and its website, OpenSecrets.org, includes donations to federal candidates, political parties and outside groups as of Oct. 13.
