National Mortgage News Wins Native American Journalism Award

National Mortgage News has won an award from the Native American Journalists Association.

"Where the Buffalo Are Neighbors," written by Editor at Large Mark Fogarty, took second place in the online features category for non-Native media in this year's National Native Media Awards.

The publication has covered the pervasive lack of mortgage lending on American Indian reservations for many years. Decades after the enabling federal programs were authorized, private lenders are venturing onto tribal land to fund subdivision infrastructures through the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Title VI Program and mortgages through the HUD 184 program.

Fogarty's story focuses on one such subdivision, located on the remote Nambe Pueblo in New Mexico, directly adjacent to the tribe's bison range.

The association's annual competition recognizes excellence in the coverage of American Indians by Native and non-Native journalists in the U.S. and Canada.
