Foreclosures Dropped in January: RealtyTrac

The number of properties in foreclosure nationwide declined in January, according to RealtyTrac.

The total number of U.S. properties with foreclosure filings attached to them in January fell 11% to 95,186, compared to a year ago, RealtyTrac said. Total foreclosure filings include default notices, scheduled notices and bank repossessions.

A total of 41,471 properties began the foreclosure process in January, a decline of 18% on a yearly basis.

Lenders completed foreclosures on 29,275 properties in the month, an increase of 32%.

New Jersey had the nation's highest foreclosure rate, followed by Nevada, Maryland, Florida and Delaware.
