Mich. Governor Signs Foreclosure Help Bills Into Law

Michigan homeowners facing a loss of their houses to foreclosure will find it easier to solve their financial problems as a result of a package of bills signed by Gov. Rick Snyder Wednesday.

Two of the bills allow counties to set up payment plans with people who are facing a loss of their homes because of unpaid taxes and waive additional interest costs once the payment plan is approved by the county treasurer and homeowner.

"More than 20,000 Detroit homeowners now have the ability to restructure their property tax debts to avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes," Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said in a statement. "We will be working closely with the Wayne County Treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz and the Detroit Land Bank to make sure Detroiters facing possible foreclosure are aware of this important opportunity."

Another bill requires that bidders on foreclosed properties register with the governmental unit 14 days before the property sale. The law is intended to give local officials time to see if the bidder is delinquent on taxes on other properties or blight fines.

The bills were among three dozen signed by Snyder Wednesday.
