Distressed sales continue to decline in central Ohio

Foreclosures, short sales and other troubled properties continue to dwindle in central Ohio, according to a report from the Columbus Realtors trade group.

The report shows that during the second quarter of this year, 324 central Ohio home sales were "lender mediated" properties, down from 507 a year earlier. Such properties accounted for 3.6% of all sales, down from a peak of 45% in 2011.

During the quarter, 336 troubled properties were listed for sale, accounting for 2.8% of all new listings, down from 35% in 2011.

Whitehall, Newark and London had the most foreclosure or short-sale activity in the second quarter.

Renters make up a larger share of households in all 50 of the largest U.S. cities, including Columbus, than they did a decade earlier, according to a Zillow report.

Zillow found that 36.9% of households rented in 2016 (the last year statistics are available), up from 32.7% in 2006.

In Columbus, 56% of households rented in 2016, up from 49.5% a decade earlier.
