Fannie Mae bought $39.9 billion of mortgages from its seller/servicers during September, the GSE's best purchase month of the year, and a sign that origination volume is strong in the primary market.
Compared to the same month last year, Fannie's purchases rose 21%.
The company also reported that its single-family delinquencies fell to 3.80% at Sept. 30, the first sequential decline of the year.
Its best purchase month was January when the GSE bought $36.5 billion of product.
New figures released by the company show that its portfolio fell 9% to $710 billion at Sept. 30. (The comparison is to the same date a year ago.)
A ward of the government, the GSE is expected to release third quarter earnings on Friday.
