Funds Investing in Ginnies Do Slightly Better than Agency Funds

Ginnie Mae funds on average during the third quarter of this year generated a 0.69% cumulative total return, while U.S. Mortgage funds that invest primarily in agency mortgage-backed securities generated a slightly lower 0.62% return, according to Lipper/Reuters.

The Putnam US Govt Inc;Y fund topped the list of Ginnie Mae funds with a 1.5% cumulative total return for the quarter, while the AMF:Intmdt Mortgage fund ranked No. 1 among U.S. Mortgage funds with a 1.67% cumulative total return.

The average cumulative total return during the third quarter for Ginnie funds overall is better than it was in the second quarter when it was -2.93%, while the average cumulative total return for U.S. Mortgage funds during the third quarter was down from 1.95% in the second quarter.
