Internet scams were the top consumer fraud complaint in 2011, according to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, but mortgages also earned a mention.
The AG's office this week released its annual list of the top ten fraud complaints reported last year.
The other nine types of complaints covered include: mortgage and foreclosure scams; credit fraud, including abusive debt collection; vehicle purchases, leasing and rentals; consumer services like catering; landlord problems; retail sales complaints, including those pertaining to gift cards; home repair; mail-order frauds; and telecommunications abuses on phone and cell services.
"Arming consumers with information is the best defense against frauds and abuses," Schneiderman said in a press release. "The crime scene of the 21st century is the Internet, and it is important for consumers to not only know their rights online, but how to seek justice."
The AG's assessment comes at a time when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is also
