The Army Times' 2009 Soldier of the Year is now a homeowner, thanks to GMAC Mortgage.
At a ceremony at yesterday's Gator Bowl, the Fort Washington, Pa.-based company donated a home in Columbia, S.C., to First Sergeant Peter Lara, an Army veteran who was wounded in action in late 2005.
A subsidiary of Residential Capital Corp., GMAC fully rehabbed the property, replaced all the flooring, added new appliances and planted a garden in the backyard.
The company worked with the Military Warriors Support Foundation to match Lara with the right home. The garden was added because gardening has been an important part of his rehab.
“GMAC Mortgage is proud to support the men and women who serve our country," said Joe Pensabene, the company's chief servicing officer.
The support foundation is a nonprofit based in San Antonio. It was founded in 2007 by Leroy Sisco, a retired three-star general who is now chief executive officer of the organization. The foundation supports veterans in finding jobs, medical care, education and homes.
