
Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro will get a boost in public visibility with a scheduled appearance on the Jan. 11 episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
The timing of the interview, on the eve of President Obama's final State of the Union address, is likely no coincidence and Castro may offer a preview of the housing-related topics that Obama will touch on during his speech.
While Castro is expected to speak on a variety of HUD initiatives, including making public housing smoke-free, affordable housing and homelessness, a source familiar with the secretary's plans said Castro is not expected to discuss housing finance issues.
Before succeeding Shaun Donovan as HUD secretary in 2014, Castro served five years as mayor of San Antonio, Texas. He first entered the national political spotlight in 2012, when he became the first Hispanic to give the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.
