The San Francisco-based bank is offering the homes as part of Operation Homefront’s “Homes on the Homefront” program.

Operation Homefront and Wells Fargo primary focus is to give unsold homes in the bank’s REO inventory to a military family currently living at an Operation Homefront Village, which is transitional housing for Wounded Warrior families. Any veteran, regardless of wounded or disability status, is eligible to apply to this program.

Some of the requirements that applicants must meet include being an active military servicemember, guard or reserve, or have been honorably discharged; not currently a homeowner; and be financially capable of sustaining the home throughout the initial transition period and beyond.

Until the properties are actually deeded to the recipients, Operation Homefront will continue to provide ongoing transitional services to those military families participating in the program.

“Wells Fargo is proud to support Operation Homefront’s efforts to make housing available for veterans,” said Tyler Smith, a vice president with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage’s Premiere Asset Services. “We hope more companies and individuals will get involved with supporting Operation Homefront’s mission that brings resources to veterans seeking ways to overcome homelessness and to address economic challenges including with the housing market.”

Last week, Bank of America also announced that it is giving up to 1,000 properties to injured military, first responders.

According to National Mortgage News’ MortgageStats, Wells Fargo was the nation’s largest residential lender and servicer in terms of total volume in the first quarter of 2012.
