Protecting Your Identity

In her last article, Amy Tierce wrote about being a victim of identity theft. Now she writes about protecting your data, your privacy, your credit and your identity.

Go Paperless: ??If you are electronic in your bill paying, if you use online sources to check your balances or review credit information, if you use online banking and other financial services - go paperless.  Paper data in your house, in your garbage and in your files can make you vulnerable.  If you love paper, buy a shredder.

Of course be sure that you use strong passwords and protections for your online financial life.  Eliminating paper extinguishes one area of potential attack by someone who could be trying to benefit from your good credit.

Protect Your Credit Cards: Many people suggest that you do not sign your credit cards. Instead write in the signature line “please ask for ID” so that the retailer has to make sure that you are the person using the card.

Be Mindful: As many ways as we can think of to protect your identity and credit there are people trying to think of ways to steal both. Be thoughtful, careful and cautious when giving out your information, handing off a credit card or transacting business online.
