Investments in mortgages grew 6% to $350 billion in 2014, higher than the 4.4% growth rate in 2013, Fitch Ratings said. Commercial mortgages comprised 78% of the investments and multifamily mortgages 12%.

The allocation of mortgages in life insurance companies' portfolios remained in the range of 8% to 12%, with large life insurers dominating the market.

Mortgage portfolio yields fell 10 basis points to 5.36% in 2014, "following the general direction of low interest rates for new money investments," Fitch Ratings said.
