• Alternative/integrative medicine—A few years ago, people used to laugh at acupuncture, yoga, meditation, herbs and other alternative therapies. The reality is that many studies are finding now that these practices actually may help. Some still challenge that, but more and more western doctors are open to them.
So before you discount alternative and so-called "herbal therapies," keep in mind that some western medicines and pills are simplified purified forms of plants found in nature. Do your own research, but you’ll find some medicines are based on compounds found in plants and herbs. (As a very basic example, aspirin is based on extract of the willow bark tree.)
Having said that, there’s always some new herbal remedy, antioxidant, or drink that cures everything. Don’t spend too much money on cure-alls. There’s no magic pill out there.
• Go less invasive first—You’ll find some doctors that want to jump right to drugs or the most invasive procedure first. They believe their way is the only way. “You have chronic back pain? Oh…we definitely need to do surgery.” “You have trouble breathing at night? Let’s do surgery to open the nasal passages.” “You’re sad sometimes? Let’s put you on anti-depressants.”
Wouldn’t it make more sense to start with less invasive first, and see how that works? I’m not saying sometimes the more invasive procedure or prescription medicine isn’t ultimately the answer. Surgery or medicine may be needed sometimes and can be a lifesaver. We’re just saying try less invasive stuff first before jumping to that.
Example: My aunt had back pain for years. She went to her doctor, who referred her to a specialist/surgeon. The specialist/surgeon recommended surgery. Shocker. She was one week away from undergoing major back surgery, when she found a modified-yoga type 10-week class. At week 5, she was virtually pain free and is to this day. So let’s compare: A $50,000-plus back surgery, tons of pain and lots of pain medication which can be hard on the liver, and a six month recuperation period. Compare that to a 10 week modified yoga class for $1,000 with no recuperation period? You decide. (Not promoting this class, but if anyone is interested, it was www.egoscue.com
Example: A friend has had horrible allergies all her life. Her doctor basically told her to take Sudafed for the rest of her life. She did that for a while, but then became desensitized to the Sudafed so she kept having to take higher and higher doses, until it really didn’t work anymore. At that point, she finally looked for an alternative. She heard of a simple device that has been used for hundreds of years in India called a Neti Pot. Although to westerners it sounds odd, basically, you rinse your nasal passages with warm salt water at night. She’s about 75% better now, and helps her sleep more soundly by keeping the nasal passages open at night. Additionally, as an added benefit, the salt discourages bacteria and viruses so it has an added benefit of keeping her from getting sick (or if she’s starting to get sick, will expedite her getting better). It’s not a perfect solution, but certainly better than taking increasing doses of medicine for the rest of your life.
I’m convinced that if you follow the ideas on this list, you’ll feel better, inside and out, and be more successful in your business. More next time.
